It has started again. That undercurrent of Christian response when a movie comes out that seems to threaten the existence of Christianity and the values that followers of Christ espouse. The Golden Compass has been talked about, blogged about and emails forwarded from the AFA imploring Christians to stay away from this movie. I haven’t seen the movie yet, but plan on doing so. What! A pastor that would see a movie that instills atheistic beliefs into the innocent minds of helpless children.
Let me just say that for way too long Christians have bashed movies, books, and artists that they haven’t taken the time to read, watch or view. I want to encourage Christians to go and see this movie so they can have intelligent conversations with those who are not yet believers regarding the movie and the principles it teaches. Yes, Phillip Pulman, the author of the book is an avowed atheist. Yes, the third book in the trilogy records God being killed. Yes, it is sexually charged. According to many reviewers, the movie itself is not supposed to be offensive, as New Line Cinema has watered down the story line. The thought out there among Christian writers, theologians, heralds, is that there is a stealth attempt to get kids interested in the books and they will go buy them and get indoctrinated to atheism. Hello! Kids are indoctrinated to atheism by other books in our public schools and in movies that they have been allowed to watch by their parents and in the music they listen to. Sounds like the same marketing technique used for the Chronicles of Narnia film.
For the sake of being able to intelligently discuss this movie with your kids, your friends and neighbors, go watch the movie. If you happen not to like like and think that it is satanic, write New LIne Cinema and tell them that you went with an open mind and in the end you thought the movie was anti-Christian, but not until you go see it!
